The basics of how audio mixers work using Mackie MIX8 small format mixer.
People ask me all the time; “What do all the knobs and buttons do on a audio mixer?”. It’s a great question. A modern audio mixer has buttons, knobs, faders, screens and more. There are so many tools at your fingertips for processing audio that the feature set on a large mixer can be daunting. So we explain the “ins and outs” of an analog audio mixers using the Mackie mix8, An easier introduction to the concepts.
The larger audio mixers, referred to as “mixing consoles” expand on these ideas. They add more built in tools. Things like meters that show you signal is present on the inputs and outputs, effects processing, maximum channel count, inputs/outputs, wireless connectivity, studio connectivity and more.
In the video, really look close at the actual inputs and outputs. where the sections are highlighted, then understanding and plugging in will be a breeze!
Important step: the line check
Always do a line check with your sound system before “showtime”. After plugging your audio sources into the mixer, check all of them to make sure their signal is present in the mixer. If you have no signal at all on one channel and you confirm there is sound coming from the source, then you may need a new cable. Change that cable out or use another know good cable to test it. Repeat this process untill all sources are tested and have control on each volume knob. Make sure there is no line noise or buzzing before things start if possible. Remember that practice makes perfect. It takes time to understand the fundamentals of audio mixers
